You Can Swim Free at These Kentucky State Parks All Summer Long
If you're looking for a way to save money on summertime fun in 2026 (who isn't?), you need look no further than Kentucky's state parks. It reminds me, and maybe you, too, that some things never change. We spent countless hours swimming at state parks throughout my childhood. It's good to know some things never go out of fashion.
While most Kentucky State Parks offer pools for campers and cottage guests, there are 10 of them with beaches where you can swim for free. So grab your swim gear and however many picnic baskets you think you'll need, and load up your ride.
Lake Malone
We might as well start with one that's practically in my backyard, and maybe yours too. Lake Malone not only offers a great swim beach, but it also features the Big Twigs. They are not to be missed.
Rough River Dam
And when you're not swimming, you can enjoy a hike on the Lake Ridge Nature Trail, do a little bald eagle watching, or rent a kayak. Better make it a weekend trip if you like to stay in the water all day.
Pennyrile Forest
When you're not swimming at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, you grab a watercraft like a canoe or paddleboat and explore other parts of the lake. Plus don't miss the Fisherman's Rock photo op.
Lake Barkley
This is where I spent a lot of summers growing up. When it comes to swimming, I prefer lakes to pools, so this story is awash with great memories for me. Needless to say, Lake Barkley is part of Land Between the Lakes, where there is never a shortage of things to do.
Kentucky Dam Village
We're staying in the Land Between the Lakes area for this one, too. This is simply a "rinse-and-repeat" from the Lake Barkley description. You'll need more than a long weekend, I think.
Nolin Lake
This is, perhaps, my favorite lake area in Kentucky. There's so much scenery and so many ways to enjoy the water, either on the lake or in a boat on the Nolin River. For me, it was a great place to just hang out and veg out during the COVID outbreak. Additionally, at Nolin Lake, you're just a short drive from Mammoth Cave. I've heard it's interesting.
Barren River Lake
We're talking about free swimming in this story, and Barren River Lake's beach is one of the best. But I've spent the night at the lodge, and the whole experience is very relaxing.
NOTE: Barren River Lake State Resort Park's beach will have a delayed opening this season.
Green River Lake
I've lived near the Green River my entire life, but it wasn't until a decade ago that I visited Green River Lake State Park. We played a little min-golf and then explored and dined in nearby Campbellsville. This would make for a chill retreat.
Buckhorn Lake
Excellent bird watching, boating, hiking, and mini-golf are all part of the charm of Buckhorn Lake. And what a setting to enjoy it all in...the foothills of the magnificent Appalachian Mountains.
Carr Creek
This is the deepest I'll be taking you into Eastern Kentucky. In fact, Carr Creek State Park in Sassafras, Kentucky, is just down the road from Buckhorn. What was once an early pioneer settlement is now one of the most attractive destinations in Appalachia. And if you love bird watching, bring the binoculars; you're likely to see several species you don't see in your backyard.

In fact, keep all your gear in the SUV. If I've tempted you at all, you'll need to be able to get your hands on it all summer long quickly.
