Kentucky Orchard Celebrating 150 Years With Week of Fall Family Fun
If you are from Daviess County or the surrounding area, when you think of apples, you think of Reid's Orchard. Chances are you have great memories of visiting the Apple House for apple cider slushies or to pick your own strawberries, apples, or pumpkins.
Did you know they are celebrating their Sesquicentennial this year? Say that five times fast. Really though, the Reid family has been a staple in the local agriculture community for one hundred and fifty years! That is incredible.
Starting back in 1873 when Billy Reid's great-grandfather Allan Reid came to America from Scotland and decided to start growing peaches and apples. Kentucky was the perfect climate for them and they were literally nectar of the gods compared to what he had access to in his homeland.
Over the years, Reid's Orchard has thrived through generations as the Apple House has grown to include Katie's amazing baked goods and treats, Kentucky Proud products, and gorgeous flowers she grows in the greenhouses and butterfly garden, Reid's Playland was added, and the beautiful event space has hosted weddings, birthdays creating special memories for so many. It truly is a family affair.
If you are like me, this upcoming third weekend of October is gonna be a little different with it being the first year the Apple Festival hasn't happened at the Orchard. Like so many of you, I grew up going to ride the rides, shop the cool vendors, and eat as many corn dogs, funnel cakes, and apple slushies as I could. It was such a special festival. Michael and I even had our engagement pictures taken there.
Instead of a weekend of fun, the Reid family is celebrating their birthday all week long, and boy do they know how to throw one heck of a party! You can enjoy all of their fun fall activities like the wagon ride to pick pumpkins, caramel apples, train rides, play in the Playland, and meet their brand new baby Alpaca, Lola! She is so precious. Just look at that face! They've also got some special fun up their sleeves.
Each day this week through the 15th, there will be a special surprise each day. It could be birthday cake, gift with purchase, or special visitors! You'll just have to give their Facebook page a follow and check each day to find out. Or just head on out to HWY 144 and have some fun! Happy Birthday Reid's Orchard! You look SO GOOD for your age!
