Spring is in the air, and if you’re like most dog owners, you’re ready to spend more time outside with your pup. Before you do, though, let’s take a quick look at the leash law rules.

While there isn’t a statewide law in Kentucky that requires dogs to be on a leash, many cities and counties across the Commonwealth have their own regulations. So what about Daviess County? Here’s what we found.

DOES DAVIESS COUNTY HAVE A LEASH LAW?

Yes, it does.

In Daviess County, dogs are required to be on a leash or otherwise under control when they’re in public. That means no letting your dog roam freely without a restraint or supervision.

If you don’t follow the leash law, you could be looking at a fine. First-time violations usually fall somewhere between $25 and $50, but repeat offenses can cost you more. In some situations, especially if there are bigger issues involved, like safety concerns or damage caused, you could even be required to appear in court.

There’s also the chance your dog could be picked up by animal control if it’s found running loose. If that happens, you’ll likely have to pay impound fees along with any fines before bringing your pet home.

DAVIESS COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL SERVICES

Animal control in Daviess County is handled through the Daviess County Sheriff's Office. They respond to calls involving loose animals and reports of neglect or cruelty, and they can issue citations when laws or ordinances are violated.

If you need to report a situation or have questions, you can contact Owensboro-Daviess County Central Dispatch at (270) 687-8888. They’ll make sure the right animal control officer gets the information.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER COUNTIES IN KENTUCKY?

Leash laws vary by location. Some counties and cities have strict rules, while others, especially more rural areas, may be more relaxed or not have a formal leash law at all.

If you’re traveling around Kentucky with your dog or thinking about getting one, it’s always a good idea to check the local rules wherever you are. A quick call to the local animal control office or county government can save you from a headache later on.
