It’s Not Pizza or Hot Dogs, Illinois’ Favorite Snack Will Surprise You
When it comes to snack foods, Illinois residents know what's up. According to a new report from Mashed, the Land of Lincoln's most famous snack isn't pizza, Italian beef, or hot dogs, but popcorn.
The Official State Snack of Illinois
Mashed went as far as calling it the state symbol and pointed out that Illinois named popcorn the official state snack in 2003, with over 47,000 acres dedicated to the crop, ranking Illinois third in the nation for production. That's a ton of popcorn popping potential.

Chicago Made Popcorn Legendary
Illinois doesn't stop there, either, because Chicago made it famous. Garrett's famous caramel and cheddar Chicago Mix, along with the invention of Cracker Jack, and the massive lines out the door at local shops, have made popcorn a part of Illinois' lifestyle.
Why Popcorn Is More Than Just a Snack in Illinois
According to Mashed:
Popcorn isn't just a movie snack in Illinois; it's a state symbol. In fact, Illinois officially named popcorn its official snack food in 2003, a fitting title given its long history with corn and agriculture. Out of all the U.S. states, Illinois is the third-largest producer of popcorn, with over 47,000 acres dedicated to growing it.

Popcorn: A True Illinois Classic
At first, I wanted to dispute Mashed's call, but they're right. Popcorn is one of Illinois' very best exports. It's simple, comforting, and beyond addictive. When's the last time you just had one handful? You know you didn't stop at just one.
