Illinois Invites Families to Winter Eagle-Watching Events at State Parks
Illinois residents are being encouraged to explore upcoming winter eagle-watching events, as bald eagles gather near open waterways across the state.
Bald Eagles Draw Winter Crowds Across Illinois
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is offering families, wildlife watchers, and outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy winter eagle-watching activities when sightings of the iconic bald eagle are at their peak.
During colder months, bald eagles migrate to areas with open water, making Illinois river corridors and state parks prime viewing locations.
Why Winter is Prime Eagle Season
According to IDNR, winter offers the best chance to see bald eagles as the birds concentrate near rivers and lakes that remain unfrozen for fishing.

Popular destinations include Starved Rock State Park in LaSalle County and the Illinois State Museum's Dickson Mounds Museum in Fulton County, both of which host educational programs and guided viewing opportunities.
IDNR Highlights Conservation and History
IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie says eagle-watching is especially meaningful as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.
Illinoisans can take advantage of numerous opportunities this winter to catch a glimpse of bald eagles soaring over our scenic waterways and river bluffs. Learning more about our national bird is especially relevant this year as the United States prepares to commemorate its founding 250 years ago. - IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie
