Just when you thought Illinois might dodge the climate crisis bullet, there's this news from Far & Wide. I was surprised to see this Illinois place on the list of 10 Major Cities That Will Become Unlivable in a Few Years.

Chicago Listed Alongside Miami and New Orleans
Of all the cities on Earth, only three in America made the list: Miami, New Orleans, and, kind of shockingly, Chicago.
The Hidden Danger Behind Chicago’s Summers
Chicago, known for its frigid winters, is also at risk for extreme summer heat. In 1995, over 700 people died during a deadly heat wave. Scientists warn that such events could return at any time, especially as climate change fuels hotter, more humid Midwest summers. Infrastructure upgrades remain critical but slow.

What Chicago Is Doing to Stay Safe
Scientific American shared some info on how the city has adapted and is now very proactive regarding extreme summer heat.
When heat indexes are forecast to exceed 110 degrees on a single day or 105 degrees over consecutive days, the city activates an extreme heat emergency response plan. Among other things, the plan requires the opening of six cooling centers and 50 cooling buses, as well as routine wellness checks for homeless, elderly and disabled residents.
So, will Chicago be unlivable in a few years? Not likely. Not if the city keeps up the fight and we keep paying attention.
