Fast food may feel universal, but a new state-by-state map from Visual Capitalist shows that Americans are far from united when it comes to their favorite chains. In fact, the results reveal a patchwork of regional loyalty, where what people crave depends heavily on where they live.

Illinois is a perfect example.

The data, compiled by FinanceBuzz using Google Trends and adjusted for restaurant locations per capita, names a single favorite fast food restaurant in every state and Washington, D.C. Across the map, burgers don’t always win, drive-ins cluster regionally, and some major brands are noticeably missing.

A Nation Divided by Drive-Thrus

Nationally, no chain dominates. Wendy's leads in six states, while Sonic follows closely with five, mostly near its Oklahoma home base. Beyond that, the list splinters quickly, with 28 different chains appearing overall.

How Neighboring States Voted

Looking around Illinois makes the variety even clearer. Wisconsin went full Midwest comfort with Culver's, while several nearby states landed on wildly different choices, from tacos to pizza to subs.

The Big Surprise on the Map

One name missing entirely may raise the most eyebrows: McDonald's. Despite its global reach, it didn’t claim a single state, possibly reflecting rising prices.

Illinois’ Choice Finally Revealed

So what did Illinois pick? Not a burger. Not fries. Not fried chicken.
Illinois’ favorite fast food chain is Jimmy John’s… a fitting choice given its Illinois roots in Charleston. It’s fast, familiar, and proudly local, proving once again that in Illinois, hometown loyalty still counts.
