The City of Evansville has shared details about the latest road closing, and it may come as no surprise to learn why.

No matter where you drive in Evansville, you are all but guaranteed to encounter three things: stoplights, orange barrels, and potholes. We even have the nickname of Stoplight City, but let's be honest. Pothole City might be more fitting at this point.

Evansville has been around for a while now. We were first chartered as a city in 1847, and since then, we have grown by leaps and bounds. Unfortunately, some of our infrastructure has failed to grow with us.

Evansville’s Aging Infrastructure Is Showing Its Age

In 2020, it was revealed that the city has about 600 miles of cast iron water pipes with an average age of more than 90 years old. 600 miles and nearly 100 years old! Needless to say, that aged infrastructure is beginning to fail and starting to cause problems. That's exactly what happened on Riverside Drive in February, causing a massive sinkhole, and the road is still closed now in June.

Virginia Street Closure Announced Near Willow Street

Now, the city has released a statement about a new road closure linked to a "pavement failure." Virginia Street, just east of Willow Street, has been closed to traffic traveling in both directions.
