The recent winter weather is impacting more than just roads and schools. The severe winter storm that struck the area is also impacting a popular outdoor destination in Southern Illinois.

Garden of the Gods Is a Popular Destination for Outdoor Enthusiests

Garden of the Gods, located in Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois is home to incredible geological rock formations, natural forest lands full of native flora and fauna, and dozens of hiking trails. It is a popular destination for hikers and campers looking for a breathtaking outdoor adventure.

Winter Weather Has Impacted Garden of the Gods Heavily

Unfortunately, the recent winter weather has had a tremendous impact on the forest of Shawnee. According to the official Facebook page for the Shawnee National Forest, there are nearly two dozen large trees down across the roadway that leads to Garden of the Gods.

Downed Trees and Treacherous Roads

In addition to the trees that are already down, the U.S. Forest Service says that the road into the park is covered in ice and lined with many additional trees that are bending and leaning under the weight of the ice and snow.

Current Conditions Make it Impassable

The current conditions make reaching Garden of the Gods treacherous for both visitors and Forest Service staff, and that makes it impossible to get the necessary equipment in to remedy the downed trees.

Gates to Garden of the Gods Are Temporarily Closed

Out of an abundance of caution, the Forest Service has made the decision to temporarily close the gates to Garden of the Gods to ensure the safety of everyone. They say they plan to reassess next week and if weather and safety conditions allow, they hope to be able to begin the process of removing the downed trees at that time.
