Holiday Travel in Indiana Could Get Messy This Week
Our Thanksgiving travel could be impacted by significant winter weather across Indiana, including Southern Indiana.
Indiana Thanksgiving Weather Forecast Details
The National Weather Service office out of Indianapolis is warning that a large portion of the state could be facing snow, ice, and strong winds over the holiday and into the weekend. The forecast outlines a cold front pushing in overnight Wednesday with winds reaching 40-50 mph, as well as the possibility of snow flurries.
What the National Weather Service Expects This Weekend
Unfortunately, that weather system is just the start. A more significant event is expected to move in Friday night into Sunday and is expected to bring with it accumulating snow. They say portions of Indiana, particularly north of I-70 could be impacted more heavily. Of course, with weather like this, snow and ice is expected to form on roads and bridges, making travel that much more dangerous.

How Winter Weather May Affect Holiday Travel
For Southern Indiana and even some Western Kentucky travelers, conditions may not be as extreme, but slick spots, freezing rain or sleet, and sudden drops in wind chills can certainly disrupt holiday plans.

Safety Tips for Driving in Snow and Ice
The National Weather Service has offered some travel safety tips for holiday travelers.
- Leave extra time for your drive.
- Check county travel status maps. Some counties may issue advisories or restrict travel.
- Pack an emergency kit, including a blanket, snacks, water, phone charger, and shovel.
- If you’re flying, monitor your airport and airline, since wintry weather can lead to delays.
- Consider shifting travel to Thursday morning before conditions worsen later in the day.
Whether you’re heading to grandma’s or staying local, now is definitely the time to prep, ensure your car is winter-ready, and stay alert for changing conditions. A little patience and preparation now can save a lot of stress later.
So if you’re planning to hit the road for turkey and family, the forecast may shift, but for now, chilly wind, a wintry mix, and possibly snow are on the way. Be ready, stay safe, and let’s make this Thanksgiving about gratitude and not traction issues!
