Have you ever driven through Indiana's deadliest intersection?

While Indiana is full of roads that offer great scenery and make for a great Sunday drive, we also have a few sketchy roads throughout the state too. Whether they are very narrow, curvy, crowded with other drivers, or just full of potholes, I'm sure we can all think of a few roads that we tend to try to avoid for one reason or another. For the most part, the roads that I tend to avoid are the ones that are downright dangerous because of heavy traffic and careless drivers. These roads include major highways, expressways, and interstates throughout Indiana. Another aspect of dangerous roads is intersections. We all know that Indiana is known as the "Crossroads of America", but some of the "crossroads" we have throughout the state cause major problems for drivers.

I think we all can come up with a few intersections here in Indiana that are terrible for several reasons. Traffic can get backed up, the lights stay red too long, or green for a short amount of time, it's hard to turn in and out of, you can't see traffic coming through the intersection due to hills or blindspots, or they just stink all the way around. You get the idea. In any event, these intersections cause several accidents, and sometimes fatal ones. The Fang Law Firm has a pretty interesting study about each state's deadliest intersection. Naturally, I was curious as to what the deadliest intersection in all of Indiana was. You know, so I know which one to avoid if at all possible.

The Deadliest Intersection in Indiana

According to The Fang Law Firm, the deadliest intersection in Indiana is US-30W and SR-19 in Warsaw. The report says that Indiana's deadliest intersection has resulted in 4 fatal crashes that occurred between 2000 and 2019. While that number is low, it's safe to assume that the number of accidents at that intersection is much higher.

Note, that this is the "deadliest" intersection in Indiana, not necessarily the intersection with the most accidents. As I was searching online for the intersection in Indiana with the most accidents, I found conflicting reports. That being said, all of the answers that I found were in Indianapolis.

How to Report a Dangerous Intersection in Indiana

There are a couple of different ways you can report a dangerous intersection in Indiana:

  1. Call the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) at 855-INDOT4U (855-463-6848) to report the issue directly.
  2. Fill out INDOT’s online form.
  3. For city or county roads, you can use this INDOT search function to find the appropriate local agency to contact.

Outside the major cities, the Hoosier state is full of tiny little towns you've probably passed through on your way to one of those cities. Most of them are likely 100 to 150 years old, or older, and have been around far longer than the large metropolitan areas such as Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Evansville. Typically, they were started by early settlers who found their way to the state and decided to make it home. Eventually, others would join them, and a community was formed. Over time, as the surrounding areas grew, most of them were folded into those areas and governed by the nearest city or county's governing body officially making them "unincorporated," meaning they did not have their own formally organized municipal government.

A scroll through Wikipedia's long list of unincorporated communities in Indiana shows several of them have names that by today's standards would be considered weird, quirky, or just downright right funny. These are my 40 favorities.
