Victorian Mansion in Southern Indiana Hosting Krampusnacht Haunted House December 15th and 16th
A Krampus-themed haunted house is heading to a historic mansion in southern Indiana, and you're invited to join!
Indiana's Culbertson Mansion
Located in New Albany, Indiana sits the historic Culbertson Mansion. The Culbertson Mansion dates back to the 1800s, IndianaMuseum.org says:
William Culbertson moved to Indiana seeking a new life and eventually became one of the richest men in the state and a renowned philanthropist. In fact, Culbertson invested much of his wealth in New Albany, involving himself in civic affairs, funding the construction of the Culbertson Widows Home, serving as a trustee of the First Presbyterian Church, and founding the Cornelia Memorial Orphans Home, named for the second of his three wives. His mansion stands as an example of the tastes, ideals and lifestyles of the late 1800s.
The Culbertson Mansion celebrates different holidays throughout the year, but in December they bring back the scares for the end of the year and host a special Krampusnacht event with a Krampus-themed haunt.
The Legend of Krampus
Krampus is the name of the mythical being that punishes bad children before Christmas. He is the exact opposite of Santa Claus. Britannica describes Krampus as:
Krampus, in central European popular legend, a half-goat, half-demon monster that punishes misbehaving children at Christmastime. He is the devilish companion of St. Nicholas. Krampus is believed to have originated in Germany, and his name derives from the German word Krampen, which means “claw.”
Every year on December 5th Krampusnacht is observed across many European countries and Australia on the day before the Feast of St. Nicholas. You can read more about Krampusnacht from National Today, here.
