A new survey of truck drivers and owner-operators says Indiana has the worst roads in the country, three roads in particular.

Indiana is known as "The Crossroads of America," mainly because the city of Indianapolis is the hub for several major Interstate highways that crisscross the state, connecting Hoosiers to the rest of the United States. While Indiana is full of roads that offer great scenery and make for a great Sunday drive, we also have a few sketchy roads throughout the state. Whether they are very narrow, curvy, cracked, crowded with other drivers, or just full of potholes, I'm sure we can all think of a few roads that we tend to try to avoid.

A recent study from U.S. News & World Report did a study on the states with the best road quality. The study found that Indiana has the best roads in America. You can read more about that by clicking here. I know, this might come as a bit of a shock to my fellow Hoosiers who drive along roads every day that we consider to be terrible for one reason or another. That being said, a more recent study came out that essentially says quite the opposite about Indiana roads.

Indiana is Home to the Worst Roads in the Country

Nearly 600 owner-operators and professional truck drivers participated in Overdrive’s newly released Truckers’ 2025 Highway Report Card. As it turns out, Indiana tops the list for the worst highway conditions in the nation. More specifically, the stretch of I-70 that runs through the Hoosier State. That being said, I-70 in Indiana isn't the only haul route ranking among the top 10 worst in the nation. Indiana had three routes among the top 10 worst, according to the survey:

  1. I-70 in Indiana
  2. I-40 in New Mexico
  3. I-40 in Arizona
  4. I-10 in Louisiana
  5. I-20 in Louisiana
  6. I-95 in New York
  7. I-5 in California
  8. I-80 in Indiana
  9. I-65 in Indiana
  10. I-70 in Colorado

As you can see in Overdrive's infographic below, truckers said their top complaint is that the “pavement condition is terrible,” and the second complaint was “clear lack of road maintenance.”

Now, this report really puts focus on those three major roads in Indiana. I don't think it would be fair to say that we have the worst roads in America as a whole. Can't let one (or three) bad apples ruin the bunch. Especially given the fact that U.S. News & World Report and Consumer Affairs both revealed that Indiana has the best road quality in the country. So, maybe there's something to the claims.

That being said, I do find it hard to believe that Indiana has the best roads overall in the country too. Personally, with the number of potholes, construction, and weird/dangerous intersections I have seen in the state, I thought Indiana would be much lower on those lists. So, maybe there's a little bit of truth to all three studies.

SEE: 35 Personalized License Plates the Indiana BMV Rejected

According to the BMV, personalized plate requests may be rejected if they contain the following, let's call them "red flags:"

  • Carries a meaning or connotation offensive to good taste and decency;
  • Would be misleading; or
  • The BMV otherwise considers improper for issuance.

There's no doubt each and every one of these violates one of those provisions, and most of them violate them all.
