Every state has areas where law enforcement likes to hang out to target speeders and hand out tickets. There's one map that shows Illinois really is just one big speed trap.

I saw this interesting map on Reddit that shows where you're most likely to get a speeding ticket. Notice the crater of blue in Illinois and especially in the Chicago area.

I've been able to verify that the reputation Illinois has for handing out speeding tickets is deserved. ABC 7 in Chicago reported last year how revenue from speed cameras had doubled. There were more speeding tickets issued in Illinois a couple years ago than Chicago has residents which is stunning.

Earlier this year, WGN-TV reported that Illinois speed camera tickets brought in a hefty $102 million dollars.

I want to be clear that I'm not blaming Illinois law enforcement officers. I used to play racquetball with a couple of Illinois State Police and they seemed to be honorable dudes (that beat me terribly at racquetball). I asked them about the perception that you could go 5 mph over the posted speed limit and you'd only get a warning. They laughed really hard at that one.

Could it be that Illinois has some over-zealous police officers with a hair trigger on the speed gun? I suppose. However, it could be that the many interstates in Illinois invite excessive speeds. One way or another, the likelihood of flashing red and blue lights behind you if you speed increases in the Land of Lincoln.
