Indiana Dog Thinks She's Little Bitty Lap Dog and It's Too Cute

Allow us to introduce you to this week's Pet of the Week from the Vanderburgh Humane Society. Meet Melody.

Meet Melody! 3-year-old Melody is so beautiful and sweet that we can’t believe she has stayed with us for over two months! She is wild about back scratches and belly rubs, and we can 100% guarantee that she will be a cuddly couch potato in her new home. We must warn you that she underestimates her weight -she is a reasonably-sized lap dog at heart. We don’t know Melody’s full history, but we believe she may be open to making animal friends. She is already spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccines, so if it’s love at first sight, she’ll be ready to go home!

VHS tips to keep your pets safe during winter weather

Are you and your pets prepared for a winter storm? Read our winter storm pet safety tips below!

Keep your pets indoors! We believe that pets are family members and should reside inside with their families, no matter the weather. Cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. Fur does not protect pets from long-term exposure to below-freezing temperatures. Do not leave pets unattended outdoors. Consider shortening dogs' walks or adding a sweater to protect them from the cold.

Stock up! Ensure that you have enough of your pets' food and medications to last several days. Don’t forget about foster animals! Stop by the shelter TODAY to stock up on foster supplies!

For feral cats and livestock: ensure access to fresh water and food. Provide extra insulation in shelters using straw or items like foam coolers, not blankets. Blankets absorb moisture and freeze. Do not set feral traps when temperatures are below freezing.

Wipe dog's paws, legs, and bellies after walks to remove toxic deicers and antifreeze.

Use caution with space heaters, candles, and other heating elements. Make sure they’re out of reach of pets and far from flammable material.
