IN DNR Shares Aerial Footage of Tornado Aftermath at Indiana State Park
One Indiana State Park was hit hard by a tornado, aerial footage shows the unimaginable damage that was caused.
McCormick's Creek State Park
Located in Spencer, Indiana sits Indiana's first state park, McCormick's Creek State Park. McCormick's Creek State Park is home to a limestone canyon, scenic waterfalls, and much more. It's a great place to camp for the weekend, and you'll never run out of things to explore. Just some of what this state park has to offer:
Explore the spectacular limestone canyon, flowing creek, and scenic waterfalls that highlight Indiana’s first state park. Hike trails featuring diverse forest trees, spicebush, and native wildflowers, including a trail through Wolf Cave Nature Preserve and an accessible trail at the recently renovated nature center. Experience history as you climb the fire tower, use shelter houses or cross the stone arch bridge created by the Civilian Conservation Corps, or examine the historic Statehouse Quarry near White River, which furnished limestone used for the Indianapolis Statehouse.
With all of this to see and do, it's easy to see why McCormick's Creek State Park is a popular destination for Hoosiers. Unfortunately, they've had to close the park temporarily after suffering devastating tornado damage.
Friday, March 31st Tornado
Friday, March 31st was a very scary day for many across the Hoosier state as a very strong line of storms tore through Indiana and other parts of the Midwest. Unfortunately, this storm came with strong winds and even had several tornadoes.
According to WRTV the storm spawned an EF-3 tornado which hit McCormick's Creek State Park, with the campground sustaining a lot of damage. They say the campground will be closed for a few weeks as cleanup takes place.
Aerial Footage Shows Tornado Devastation
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Facebook page shared a video that showed the extent of the tornado damage, and it's absolutely heartbreaking. You can see that there are hundreds to thousands of downed trees, damaged campsites, RVs, and more. The video is captioned:
