Y'all. Can you believe it's almost summer? As I'm writing this, my daughter is celebrating field day, she has elementary graduation tomorrow, and then she'll be done with school for the next few months. I wish I got a summer break. Aack, why did I want to grow up so badly?

I grew up in Kentucky - aka - the South. It was hot, it was muggy, and it was the 80s. We drank from hoses and didn't wear shoes much. We also didn't have parents who drove us everywhere to entertain us. I was lucky to go to a birthday party at McDonald's or snag a Pizza Hut personal pan if I read enough books through the year. Times was tough!

One way we entertained ourselves was to make our own homemade ice cream. It's pretty easy. All you need is:

  • Ice
  • A gallon ziplock bag
  • A quart ziplock bag
  • Salt
  • A cup of half-and-half
  • A tsp of vanilla
  • Two tablespoons of sugar
  • Any mix-ins you want like chocolate chips, peanut butter, sprinkles, etc.

Directions:

  1. Put the half-and-half, sugar, and vanilla in the small quart bag.
  2. Put ice in the gallon bag and sprinkle a healthy layer of course salt over the top. Ice cream or kosher salt works best.
  3. Put the ingredient bag inside the ice bag. Make sure everything is securely closed.
  4. Shake it like a polaroid picture for about 6-10 minutes.

That's it! Here's a video of influencer Meghan Lynn demonstrating. BTW if you are a southern woman like me and you don't follow her, buckle up. She's a hoot! You're gonna love her.

I can't wait to do this with my daughter this summer. I make homemade icecream a lot but it's never this easy!
