Gavin Had a Tough Time Filling Out the Disney vs Pixar Bracket
This is the hardest thing I've ever had to complete.
Does looking at the above bracket give you all the anxiety? It certainly did that to me. Asking someone to eliminate classic Disney/Pixar movies in favor of other classic Disney/Pixar movies is a task no one should ever have to do. Luckily, I was able to complete this task, but my soul might never be the same.
ROUND 1
Round 1 wasn't too bad as it trimmed the fat rather quickly. Having Toy Story and Toy Story 2 go against each other was a bold move, but it was going to happen sooner or later. It was very easy for me to eliminate the Cars franchise because those movies suck.
On the Disney side, the only real tough decision was Mulan vs Zootopia. The classic won over the more recent film and all was right in the world. And yes, I realize I have Beauty and the Beast losing to Nightmare Before Christmas but I'm basically an emo-adult so LET ME HAVE MY SPOOKY LOVE STORY!
ROUND 2
The second round was a little tougher but not as bad as I thought. You can see both Toy Story films move on in the Pixar section. The big "upset" is Monsters, INC over The Incredibles. I like The Incredibles, but I enjoy Monsters, INC more. Sorry everyone.
The Disney side was more predictable with the classics moving onto the next round. Again, the Nightmare Before Christmas moves on because I'm wearing mostly black while I type this.
ROUND 3
Oh, okay, this is what the anxiety of doing this should feel like! Lion King vs Moana wasn't hard to figure out. However, Nightmare Before Christmas VS Aladdin was the single hardest decision I've made in the past 5 years. Even though I love NBC with all of my heart, I think Robin Williams as Genie and "A Whole New World" just set it over the top for me. Please don't revoke my Hot Topic Rewards card.
On the Pixar side, Toy Story 2 VS Toy Story 3 wasn't an easy decision. The deciding factor for me was the incinerator scene in TS3. If you weren't crying during that then you just don't have a soul. Finding Nemo gets past Monsters, INC to round out the Final Four.
ROUND 4
In the Final Four, we had Aladdin VS Lion King on the Disney side and Toy Story 3 VS Finding Nemo for Pixar. How does someone even start to compare these amazing films?
You do the only thing you can do: rely on nostalgia. I remember everything I was feeling when Aladdin came out when I was 6 years old. I remember wearing out the VHS of the movie. I do love The Lion King and it also has a special place in my heart, but man, Aladdin just has that inexplicable "it" factor for me. Also, I liked that Aladdin, like me, was also poor.
Toy Story 3 VS Finding Nemo was decided by similar factors. I just can't shake the emotional rollercoaster I felt while watching Toy Story 3. I grew up with the franchise just as Andy had done. Once I considering those things, putting Toy Story 3 in the finals was easy.
FINALS
Classic vs New Classic. Disney VS Pixar. It all came down to Aladdin vs Toy Story 3 as the greatest Disney/Pixar film.
What more can I say about either of these films? They are both absolutely fantastic and either of them could have been the winner. Unfortunately, only one of these films is Aladdin.
Need I say more?
Aladdin was my overall champion after much soul-searching. It's a movie I will love until the end of time. It has a great villain, a great message, and some of the greatest songs ever performed in a Disney film.
