"Grease" is about to be the word again!  About a year ago, entertainment news broke that Paramount Pictures was developing a prequel to the 1978 movie Grease.  The new movie is going to be called Summer Loving and is expected to center on Sandy and Danny and all the "Summer Lovin" they had at the beach before they got back to school at Rydell High.

Just a few days ago, more news broke about the project.  The movie now has a director. According to Broadway.com, Brett Haley will direct the film.  Haley directed the films The Hero (which starred Sam Elliott) and Hearts Beat Loud (the Nick Offerman-led comedy drama about a father-daughter songwriting duo).

I remember seeing Grease for the first time as a kid.  My family rolled into the Holiday Drive-In over in Reo to see it.  It was awesome and still is.  Remember the official trailer?

Of course, Grease was based on the 1971 Broadway musical, which has been revived several times over the last few decades.  I saw a touring company of the show in Louisville in the mid '90s and Brooke Shields played Rizzo.  I kid you not!  And Sally Struthers was Principal McGee.

The musical version of the show was also recently broadcast live on FOX. Remember that?  It was back in 2016 that Grease: Live starring Julianne Hough and Aaron Tveit (who I saw on Broadway in Moulin Rouge! the night before the Broadway shutdown began due to COVID-19).

In addition to movie and Broadway versions of Grease, there was also Grease 2, the 1982 sequel which starred Maxwell Caufield and Michelle Pfeiffer.

That movie also featured music from the original Grease composers, Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, who has since passed away.  As of this story, there's no word yet on who will write the music for the prequel or who will star in the project.

All I know is this.  I can't wait!  I'm hopelessly devoted to the idea of a prequel and it's the one that I want.
