Middle School Drama

When my daughter signed up for 4H a few years ago, I had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Most of it is about preparing your project for the fair, but when those projects involve taking care of animals, it’s more than just a project - it’s a lifestyle. And it teaches them so much about responsibility, hard work, and even a little biology.

I met Kodie Williams last year when our daughters competed in the horse and pony show at the Warrick Co. fair. Her daughter Alexis also shows a variety of animals, so they’re no strangers to life on the farm. But when Kodie posted that Alexis delivered some kids, I was floored. Alexis is in middle school, and the "kids" she delivered were goats!

Chores She'll Never Forget

One cold afternoon, Alexis headed outside to tackle her after-school chores, but she didn’t expect to find her goat in labor! Panicked, she immediately called her mom, Kodie, who was at work. Kodie shared that her family doesn’t usually call unless it’s an emergency, so she knew something serious was going on. When Kodie answered the phone she heard her daughter crying on the other end of the line.

What an evening it was. My family normally doesn’t ever call me when I’m at work unless it’s an emergency. Thinking something was really wrong I stepped somewhere private and took the call.

Mom Talks Her Through It

When Kodie found out that Alexis’s goat was in labor, she quickly reassured her daughter and talked her through the miracle of goat birth. Sadly, one kid had already passed by the time Alexis found her, but she didn’t let that stop her. With her dad’s help, Alexis successfully delivered two healthy doelings. She made sure they were warm and cozy in the barn, setting up a heat lamp to keep them comfortable. Kodie later shared that the babies are doing great—healthy, nursing, and thriving under the warmth of the heat lamp.

She called her daddy outside and brought all the things. Bottles, nipples, warm water, and a ton of towels and rags. All said and done the doe was able to successfully have 2 beautiful healthy doelings. Alexa did have to help her with her last one and she was so brave to do it all on her own and make sure they stayed so warm in this 8 degree weather.

The G.O.A.T.

What a huge milestone that many of us will never get the opportunity to experience. And hats off to Alexis for keeping her cool and being a true G.O.A.T. See, what I did there?
Needless to say. I am one VERY VERY PROUD MAMA. Not many 11 year olds can say they delivered baby goats on their own. Welcome earth side babies!
