The Better Business Bureau warns consumers to be cautious of "storm chasers" - businesses and contractors that pop up after severe weather.

Severe Weather is Not Uncommon

We experienced some significant weather last week in the Evansville area, and I saw photos online of several businesses, homes, and even churches that sustained damages from the storm that moved through the area. This type of weather is not uncommon in our part of the country.

Finding Help After the Storm

Whether you need help clearing debris, or replacing siding or a roof after a storm, there are lots of options on who to hire. The Better Business Bureau suggests that you get at least three estimates before hiring a company to do the work for you. They also warn against predatory practices, or "storm chasers," as they call them - people who actively seek out homeowners to take advantage of after a severe weather incident.

Unfortunately, the aftermath of a crisis also brings out contractors taking advantage of those who have already been victimized. Better Business Bureau is warning homeowners affected by natural disasters to beware of “storm chasers” and out-of-town contractors soliciting business. Although not all storm chasers are scammers, they may lack the proper licensing for your area, offer quick fixes, or make big promises they can’t deliver.

What to Do After a Storm

After the storm clears, you realize that your home or property has sustained damage. Now, what do you do? According to the Better Business Bureau, you should start by contacting your insurance company before you begin your research to find reputable businesses to hire. BBB advises that you get three estimates, and always make sure that any agreement between you and a contractor is in writing. They also suggest that you pay using a credit card. This will allow you to dispute the charges if an issue arises later. To learn more, visit the Better Business Bureau website.
