A Beginner’s Guide to Kentucky’s Craft Beer Scene
Now, I love bourbon, don't get me wrong. She's my girl. However, it really isn't fair that she gets all of the attention when it comes to beverages made in Kentucky. The history of beer brewing in the Bluegrass state dates back to the 1800s.
The largest in the state is Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. with the oldest being Sig Luscher Brewery in Frankfort. Louisville has some very interesting craft brewing history as well you can read more here. According to drink-ky.com, "There are now more than 60 breweries in cities across Kentucky, and the number continues to grow each year with little sign of slowing." That is certainly evident across the Western part of the Bluegrass.
If you aren't sure where to start when it comes to craft beer, The West Kentucky Brewery Hop is a list of great spots to grab a cold one...or several. With extra added perks for true craft beer lovers. There is a downloadable passport to keep track of the breweries you have visited or want to check out on future travels. You can even earn points to unlock "exclusive prizes." Here are the cities and stops along the way.
A lot of these places have excellent live music scheduled and food menus that will make your mouth water! From BBQ, nachos, pizza, and wings to some serious gourmet grub. Ask a craftsman at each location for their recommendations when pairing what to drink with your order.

What I love about the official Brewery Hop website is that they also list fun things to do in each town if you want to make a whole sight-seeing road trip out of it. I think this would be a really cool and unique bachelor or birthday party. Make a long weekend of it, draw straws for designated drivers and plan your route. If you want to go across the whole state, here is a list of Tripadvisor's 15 best breweries in Kentucky.
Thomas Jefferson once said, “Beer softens the temper, cheers the spirit and promotes health.” We’ll drink to that! And there are plenty of places in Western Kentucky to fill a mug and enjoy local brews. Which one is your favorite?
