Downtown Evansville

There is no denying the growth that's happened over the past couple of decades in downtown Evansville.  Our city has a quaint downtown that's home to several local businesses, restaurants, bars, and more. Visit Evansville describes downtown Evansville as:

Any time of year, find themed events, photo opportunities, pop-ups, music and more on Main Street. On a side note, take a side street to see historic gothic buildings or unique stops like the restored vintage Greyhound bus station. Be enchanted by Victorian homes along charming tree-lined, bricked streets throughout nearby neighborhoods including the Reitz Home Museum. Follow Millie's Downtown Dino Trail from the Children's Museum to the Evansville Museum. The LST 325 WWII ship sits proudly along the scenic Ohio River with Bally’s Casino Evansville.

In fact, the Downtown Evansville Economic Improvement District works hard to put on several large-scale events every year like the Wine Walk, Santa Stroll, Market on Main, and much more!  It seems like downtown Evansville is constantly growing. I've grown up in the Evansville area, and it's been really cool to see all of the changes and growth that's happened over the years.  As great as the growth is, it's always fun to look back on years past.

32-Year-Old Downtown Evansville Commerical Surfaces Online

Recently on Facebook in the "I Grew Up in Evansville Indiana" group, someone shared a commercial from downtown Evansville from 1990, and it is quite the throwback!

I don't know what's better about the commercial, reminiscing about the stores, or the early 90s fashion!   Do you remember back when stores like De Jong's, Dickson's, and Strouse's used to be downtown?  Talk about a total nostalgia bomb!

Then & Now - Evansville's Washington Square Mall Through the Years

Evansville is home to a lot of unique buildings including the first enclosed retail shopping center in Indiana. Yes, our very own Washington Square Mall was the place to be when it opened in 1963. If you walk through the mall today, you would never guess how alive the shops were, even through the 1980s. Enjoy this walk down memory lane I've put together, and maybe someday there will be new life inside 5011 Washington Ave.
