New Netflix Instant Releases: June 2017

It’s that time again: time to round up everything coming and going from all the streaming services at the start of the new month. Netflix has a pretty fantastic slate for this June, which includes their Cannes contender Okja, directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal. There’s also a few popular 2016 releases like Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only the End of the World, and Catfight, that movie about Sandra Oh and Anne Heche beating the living daylights out of each other. And if you want to hear a bunch of animated plants sing Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence,” give Trolls a shot.

Netflix ‘Dear White People’ Trailer Gets Its Own Trigger-Warning

Despite its 2014 release as a film, Dear White People caused some minor uproar with its first Netflix TV series announcements. Thankfully, the full trailer for the adaptation of Justin Simien’s racial satire comes with its very-own trigger warning to weed out misplaced outrage.

Channing Tatum to Voice an R-Rated George Washington in ‘America: The Motion Picture’

After the release of the shocking Sausage Party racked up an equally shocking $140 million (far more than any of us expected a movie involving anal beads forcibly yanked out of an anthropomorphized hot dog bun to make), it was only a matter of time until more bawdy animation followed. Cartoons for grown-ups may be on their way to a moment in the sun, as today brings the news that Netflix has launched production on an R-rated project in a similar vein. But they won’t stop at desecrating the sacred space of the grocery store. This time, nothing short of our nation’s origin story will provide the canvas for whatever vulgarity they’ve got in store.

‘Iron Fist’ Star on K’un L’un Diversity Altering ‘White Savior’ Narrative

There’s an ominous cloud of skepticism surrounding Marvel’s Netflix Iron Fist, that for as many trailers and featurettes precede the March 17 premiere, the fourth Defender series invariably co-opts Asian culture with its white lead. Now, star Finn Jones offers in-depth response to the controversy surrounding Danny Rand’s “white savior” role, including changes to the diversity of the comics’ K’un L’un, and why viewers should give the series a chance.

Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix – An Honest Review

In my home (me, my girlfriend, and two dogs), we're big fans of Netflix.  The weekend before last, we saw a trailer for a show that was about to debut on the streaming service starring Drew Barrymore (whom I usually like) and Timothy Olyphant called "Santa Clarita Diet."  The two star as a married couple with one teenage daughter whose lives take a turn for the weird, dark, and humorous when poor Sheila Hammond (Barrymore) gets sick and turns into a zombie!  We were excited to watch it, which we did this weekend.  (It came out on Friday 2/3/17.)

Is Netflix Teasing Another ‘Gilmore Girls’ Revival to Come?

Unlike other revivals, Netflix’s Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life seemed expressly designed to return its prolific cast for one last stay in Stars Hollow. That is, until those oft-referenced four final words left further questions to answer, something Netflix now seems to be teasing over Twitter.

‘Scrubs’ Star Zach Braff Talks Possible Netflix Revival

Scrubs already proved once that extending the franchise is no guarantee of success, even if the NBC-turned-ABC comedy ditched half the original cast for its Interns continuation. That said, Netflix has managed to revive a number of fan-favorites, so what would Zach Braff say to giving a Scrubs revival series the full greenlight?

What’s Leaving Netflix Instant: January 2017

Just as Netflix Instant giveth, so must Netflix Instant taketh away, and while there are plenty of great new titles coming to the streaming giant’s service in January, there’s almost just as many that will expire. Now’s a good time to stop procrastinating and finally get around to checking out some of those 30 For 30 specials, or maybe binge-watch every season Murder, She Wrote (you can knock out 12 seasons of Jessica Fletcher in two weeks, right?). January also sees the exit of teen classics like Bring It On and Sixteen Candles, which sounds like a great Saturday night double feature — but you only have a few more weeks to make that happen.

‘Black Mirror’ Director Talks ‘San Junipero’ Sequel, Season 4

Black Mirror had hits and misses in its double-size transition to Netflix for Season 3, but few stood out so much as the ‘80s-tinged, and oddly-optimistic “San Junipero.” Black Mirror isn’t the type for direct sequels, however connected its stories might be, but the episode’s director weighs in on another potential visit to “San Junipero.”
