Alan Rickman, the tremendously talented British actor behind such iconic roles as Hans Gruber in Die Hard and Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films, has died at the age of 69 following a bout with cancer.
After three straight years of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting, the Golden Globes invited previous three-time host Ricky Gervais (2010-2012) to return for the 2016 awards show. Said Gervais back on January 1, “Because I can see the future, I’d like to apologise [sic] now for the things I said at next week’s Golden Globes. I was drunk & didn’t give a f---.” So, did Gervais wind up having anything to apologize for this year? If you missed it, you can watch his 2016 Golden Globes monologue above and decide for yourself.
It was a great year for movies. One of the best in recent memory, in fact, with enough outstanding films to fill three or four top ten lists. But the good in any artistic medium will always be outweighed by the bad, and even as it seems like the number of potential classics grows every year, the number of certified stinkers grows as well. Exponentially; there’s enough cinematic turd burgers from the last twelve months to fill seven or eight top ten lists.
Sylvester Stallone became a star playing Rocky Balboa, but did you know that United Artists wanted to buy Stallone’s script for Rocky and cast another actor in the title role? Before they finally agreed to let Stallone have the part, they tried to cast actors like Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds, and James Caan. That’s just one of the facts crammed into the latest episode of You Think You Know Movies, which goes the distance on the original 1976 classic, Rocky.
Cult comedies that attempt to regroup for a sequel many years after the original film often have mixed success. You’ll probably find few people who like Anchorman 2 or Dumb and Dumber To as much as the originals. There are five key emotions in Pixar’s Inside Out: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. But did you know there were originally over 20 emotions that were going to appear? That’s just one of the surprising facts packed into the latest episode of You Think You Know Movies, which journeys deep into the inner recesses of the Memory Dump to bring you this episode all about Inside Out.
Harrison Ford appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night to talk publicly for the first time about breaking his ankle on the set of Star Wars, crashing his plane and how Star Wars: The Force Awakens is an “incredible” movie. Oh, we should also mention he did all this while dressed up as a hot dog.
In the tradition of ScreenCrush series like You Think You Know Movies and You Think You Know TV comes a brand new YouTube series: Top Five! Each week (or so; we’ve got a lot of other stuff going on), ScreenCrush editor and critic Matt Singer will count down a particular topic from the world of movies (and probably write these introductory posts in the third person).
The wait is over! After it was officially announced a few weeks ago that Sam Smith would be singing the official James Bond theme for Spectre, today you can download the full track, “Writing’s on the Wall...
At last year’s Emmys, Jimmy Kimmel sent a message to Tracy Morgan, who had been hospitalized in a coma following a traffic accident that killed one of Morgan’s friends and fellow comedians. “Shout out to Tracy Morgan, we’ll see you next year, Tracy,” Kimmel told the audience at the time. Almost one year later, Morgan made good on Kimmel’s promise and surprised the Emmys crowd as he arrived on stage to present the final award of the night for Best Drama Series to a standing ovation from the crowd.
