Could We See Snow on Halloween in the Tri-State?

I remember trick-or-treating one Halloween in the snow when I was a kid. It was just a light dusting, but it’s the only time I can recall all the conditions lining up to see those white flakes in the tri-state before late November. The past few years have been really warm. Last year, my husband and I went as Wayne and Garth. He wore a t-shirt, and I had on a flannel shirt. And even during a really chilly Halloween a couple of years ago, we still didn’t get snow.

The Folklore That Sparked My Curiosity

So, imagine my surprise when I saw a Facebook post claiming that snow might be possible around Halloween this year in the tri-state area. Um, I'm sorry. What?

I did a little digging and found what they were referencing is actually weather folklore. The claim goes:

“The first snowfall comes six weeks after the last thunderstorm in September.”

Hmmm, we did have a very brief thunderstorm last week. I only remember because my small dog ran outside and barked at the sky like he was challenging Thor, God of Thunder.

Why This Folklore Doesn’t Always Add Up

Well, first of all, September isn’t even over yet, so we could still get a thunderstorm or two. Even if this rule were true, there have been many Octobers and Novembers without a single snowflake. Plus, are these weather sayings universal? Our local climate is very different from other regions, so the timing might not apply here at all.

The Takeaway

While it’s fun to wonder if we’ll see a white Halloween, folklore isn’t the most reliable predictor. But who knows? Maybe this year, we’ll finally get a snow-dusted Halloween in the tri-state. The weather has been extra crazy this year!
