Smoking Ban for All Public Housing Goes Into Effect on July 31st
Smoking will be banned in public housing nationwide at the end of the month. Public Housing Agencies have known since November 2016 the ban was coming.
The policy states no smoking will be allowed within 25 feet of any public housing, outside or inside. Individual housing agencies can provide more smoke-free areas if they want.
The U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department says smoking can cause maintenance costs to increase. The smoke-free rule not only applies to smoking itself, but can also prevent the risk of accidental fires.
Renters can smoke in their own unit, just not in restricted areas and the policy may also apply to e-cigarettes.
