Kentucky is Home to a Real-Life Pet Cemetery, But It’s Not as Scary as You Think
Remember the Stephen King book/movie Pet Sematary?
Well, thankfully, THIS isn't THAT!
Believe it or not, Kentucky is home to a real-life pet cemetery and it's actually not scary at all. In fact, the relatively recent effort to preserve it is exceptionally heartfelt and sweet.
About five years ago, Pet Haven Cemetery, in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, was looking a bit like something you'd see in that Stephen King novel. The 3+ acre lot was a visual wreck and the many tribute monuments there were overgrown with weeds and brush. The cemetery had basically been abandoned and pet owners were told they needed to come dig up their pets if they wanted to be able to keep them. For the families that had buried pets there, that was emotional, traumatic and sad.
Thankfully, that's when Joni Blake stepped in.
Today, Pet Haven Cemetery is thriving. That major revitalization effort saved the property and today many popular annual fundraisers- including the Howl-O-Ween Spook-Tacular- help sustain it.
For pet owners in the area, Pet Haven Cemetery gives them a wonderful final resting place for their four-legged friends.
Recently, one family was able to lay to rest seven of their pets there.
Families are encouraged to memorialize their pets in the most magnificent of ways.
When Beau's remains arrived at Pet Haven, they shared this:
We welcome sweet "Beau" and give his wonderful family the peace of mind that their boy is flying high! Rest easy sweetie!
As you can see, in addition to providing a place to lay pets to rest, Pet Haven Cemetery also immortalizes those pets on social media. Each time an animal is buried, Joni shares their story and says goodbye on Facebook as well.
Pet Haven Cemetery is located at 2384 KY-44 in Shepherdsville, Kentucky.
