Dear Driver, I have a bit of a bone to pick with you. I won't belabor the point because I have moved on to other things. But after giving it some thought, I've decided I could say this to you AND offer a public service announcement in the process.

The other day, I was out riding my bike. Now, before I go any further, I'll let you know I keep my bike here in the office because the route I like begins in this parking lot. I like to go anywhere from five to seven miles. It's usually five. I go longer when I have more time and it's an extraordinary day.

But I digress and I don't want to lose you.

While I was riding down Griffith Avenue--I go from the Bosley Road intersection to Frederica Street--you came very near my bicycle with your SUV and honked. And, if you'll recall, you SAT on your horn. Meanwhile, like I usually do, I was riding as close to the curb as I possibly could. And, no, I don't like to ride on sidewalks if I can possibly help it.

Not only did you honk, your traveling companion hung her head out the window and said something to me that I could not understand. Whatever.

Here's the deal, sir or madam. We bicyclists are not here to make your life miserable. Not even close. We're here to enjoy a wonderful combination of exercise AND pleasure. For me, there's a great deal of nostalgia, as well. And for scenery, you can't beat Griffith.

The point is, I was well out of your way, and everyone else's way. Maybe you didn't notice, but no one else honked.

What's more, there was no one coming in the westbound lane, so it's not like you should've been concerned about room. Even so, you would have had plenty. I am ALWAYS conscious of vehicular traffic.

So, here's the deal. I will continue to enjoy my bicycle (even though it's getting colder and fewer opportunities will be presenting themselves). I will continue to ride in a manner that gives motorists ample room to pass me.

Hopefully, if we meet again, you will have gotten it out of your system.

Or maybe I'll just get a horn for the bike and honk back.

Peace.
