Mesker Park Zoo Welcomes Adorable Baby Penguin into the World!
One of the most popular families at Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden has grown by one, and this will make you so happy.
What Happens in Quarantine...
I don't actually know what our penguin couple Adrian and Chirrida have been doing during the multiple quarantines they have had because of avian flu in our area. But, I do know that they surprised us with an egg-citing announcement.
Welcome to the Word Baby Penguin
The new baby penguin, known as a chick, was born on Sunday, April 2, 2023. Unlike a typical baby announcement, we don't know the weight or length. The zoo keepers are checking on it daily to make sure it is staying healthy.
Two Big Questions Remain
You are probably wondering if it is a boy or a girl. Well, in the bird world, you can't just tell what it is right off the bat. In order to determine the sex of the chick, a blood sample has been sent to be evaluated.
Once we know if the baby penguin is a boy or a girl, Mesker Park Zoo plans on hosting a naming fundraiser as a way to support the Zoo.
When will you see it? Both parents and the chick are located in a nest that is viewable from the visitor area, but the parents will keep the chick under close watch and in that nest box for the time being. Penguin chicks have to grow in their waterproof feathers and take swimming lessons from the keepers before it is able to swim successfully. (This can take around 3 months)
