Katy Perry Loses Lawsuit Over ‘Dark Horse’ Music Theft
A California jury has just found Katy Perry and her Production team guilty of using musical property without permission for the 2013 song 'Dark Horse'. According to the decision, parts of Katy Perry's hit were found to be strikingly similar to the song “Joyful Noise” made by Christian rap artist Marcus Gray, aka Flame.
Flame is a Grammy, Dove, and Stellar Award nominated, Christian rapper and his song 'Joyful Noise' was #1 on Christian music charts. Although Katy Perry and her producers deny any part of the pilfering, jurors thought there was enough similarity to award Gray the judgement.
From what I hear, there is a slight similarity in pattern of one of the melodies but not enough to call it theft. There are only so many combinations of notes you can do, so some songs are bound to sound similar to others.
