Bye Bye Birdie, hello Jennifer Lopez!

The actress and singer has been cast to star as Rosie Alvarez — girlfriend to the titular character Conrad Birdie's songwriter and agent, Albert Peterson — in NBC's forthcoming holiday 2017 live television adaptation of the the iconic musical.

In a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Lopez, who usually performs the song "A Lot of Livin' To Do" from Bye Bye Birdie as part of her Las Vegas residency set, gushed about working with NBC on the musical as well as the opportunity to star in one of her favorite Broadway shows.

"Broadway musicals and films fueled my childhood and Bye Bye Birdie was one of my favorites," she said. "I’m proud to be a part of the NBC family with Shades of Blue and I thought it would be a blast to take on one of their big live musicals."

On October 27, NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt announced the casting during a panel at the Paley Center For Media in New York City, where he revealed that it was actually the actress's idea to do the musical.

"She came to us and said, 'I love this movie and I'd love to do it,'" he shared.

"To have a superstar like Jennifer Lopez starring in this classic show, which every high school in America has done, will ensure that our holiday musicals continue to be must-see events for the whole family," Greenblatt added. “It was her idea to take on this classic singing and dancing role made famous by the legendary Chita Rivera, and we are so happy to oblige!"

Lopez will also executive produce the live television musical. She follows in the footsteps of Chita Rivera and Janet Leigh, who famously portrayed the character of Rosie onstage and onscreen, respectively.
