 Walgreens Cites Profitability and High Theft as Reasons for Closures

The 1,200-store closure plan stems from Walgreens’ recent struggles with profitability, with about 25% of their stores failing to turn a profit. According to Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth, the company aims to close locations that are either struggling financially or are close to another Walgreens store. Rising retail theft, which increased for many businesses during the pandemic, has also been a factor, though Walgreens admits that theft alone isn’t the root of their challenges.

In recent years, competition from online retailers like Amazon, as well as big-box stores like Walmart and Costco, has impacted Walgreens’ profitability, especially in the sale of everyday household goods. As more customers purchase items online, Walgreens and similar drug stores have found it harder to maintain foot traffic, leading to the decision to downsize.

 What Evansville Residents Need to Know About the Upcoming Closure

For Evansville residents, the Walgreens at 2015 Covert Ave, Evansville, IN 47714, will officially close on December 15, 2024. Customers who currently fill prescriptions at this location can transfer them to the nearby Walgreens at 925 S Green River Rd, Evansville, IN 47715.
