My teenage son is finally at the age where he wants to update his wardrobe. We have the best luck finding stuff he likes at a very popular store at the mall. So, I need this department store to remain in business.

Big Name Businesses Folding

The list of businesses that are closing locations or filing for bankruptcy protection is growing rapidly this year. It's only mid-February but it seems like we are 13 months into 2025. We're saying goodbye to Party City in Evansville, and Coconuts FYE closed last month.

Joann Fabrics and Crafts is closing 500 locations and that includes 20 in Indiana. Denny's restaurants are planning closures of under-performing locations, and now I see that JCPenney is on the chopping block.

What About JCPenney in Evansville, Indiana?

I do have a piece of good news regarding the status of the JCPenney located in Eastland Mall. It is not, I repeat not on the closing list. You can see the list of stores that are closing by clicking here.

Last month, a merger was announced that should help some popular brands stay in business.

Catalyst Brands brings together SPARC Group’s brands Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers, Eddie Bauer, Lucky Brand and Nautica with JCPenney and its exclusive private brands, including Stafford, Arizona and Liz Claiborne.

A Walk Through Time in Eastland Mall

We talk about Washington Square Mall a lot, and how it is now on the Dead Mall list. I thought it would be neat to compare some of these photos from 1981 to the ones that I took in 2022, just to see the differences.

Then and Now - See Inside Evansville, Indiana's Eastland Mall

Eastland Mall opened in 1981, and it has changed a lot through the years. JC. Penny still anchors the mall on one end, and what was Lazarus Department Store is now Macy's.

Then & Now - Evansville's Washington Square Mall Through the Years

Evansville is home to a lot of unique buildings including the first enclosed retail shopping center in Indiana. Yes, our very own Washington Square Mall was the place to be when it opened in 1963. If you walk through the mall today, you would never guess how alive the shops were, even through the 1980s. Enjoy this walk down memory lane I've put together, and maybe someday there will be new life inside 5011 Washington Ave.
