Okay, when I hear 'Dora', I immediately think 'Dora the Explorer', but she's not what this new development is about.

What is DORA?

DORA stands for Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, and it’s a game-changer for downtown events and strolls. Here’s how it works: If you’re 21 or older, you can buy an alcoholic drink from a participating bar, restaurant, or brewery within the DORA zone, and then take that drink with you as you walk around, shop, or enjoy live music and events outside.

There are a few things to keep in mind:

  • The drink has to come from a business that’s been approved by the Alcohol & Tobacco Commission.
  • Your beverage must be in a special DORA cup. That’s how businesses (and police) know it’s legit.
  • You can only sip within the clearly marked DORA boundaries.

Here's a graphic with the boundaries outlined:

I reached out to Adam Trinkel, the Executive Director of the Downtown Evansville Economic Improvement District, and he emphasized the positive impact this will have on Downtown Evansville:
"We are excited to launch the Downtown Evansville DORA on July 4th.  We have talked with peer cities and learned about the many benefits a DORA will bring to our neighborhood, including increased activity and an enhanced Downtown experience all year, particularly during large events. DORAs have demonstrated results, as evident by more than 30+ within the state of Indiana."

So basically, DORA turns downtown into a walkable social space where you can enjoy a drink in hand legally and responsibly. This link provides more info, and you can also find everything you need to know about Downtown Evansville.
