Look Out for Coyotes Looking for Love in KY, IN, and IL

I surprise people when I tell them I don't remember seeing rabbits running around my neighborhood when I was a kid. That didn't come until much later. Then deer became more and more prevalent on the sides of roads. Visual encounters with red foxes, coyotes, and beavers followed.

As we expand beyond our suburban conclaves, more and more creatures will make themselves known while looking for shelter, food, or, yes, love.

Coyote Mating Season

That brings me back to coyotes. It is mating season, and they are currently looking for love. And they don't care if they're in all the wrong places. This fact of life also means our region's most common wild canines are more aggressive than they would be otherwise. I want to share this post from an Albuquerque NM animal rescue. I know it's more than 1,200 miles away, amorous coyotes are amorous coyotes regardless of what state they're in.

Can Coyotes Climb?

Naturally, there were comments expressing consternation that a wolf was on a roof. Another one indicated skepticism that it was a real photo at all. (We're all suspicious of AI these days, it would appear.) All I can say is "WATCH":

It looks like somebody wanted an apple. While that's certainly a more desirable target than your cat, it DOES exemplify what coyotes can do if they want something. If a coyote would climb a tree for an apple, what do you think he would do for a "love connection"?

As for the side-eye given to the roof picture, look what happened in Queens NY 10 years ago.

They want what they want, and they'll do what's in their power to get it. And that includes traveling very long distances. We're in coyote country, and two plus two equals mind your cats and dogs, and make sure they are safe.
