Unofficial Nicknames for KY’s Largest Cities — Are There More?
When you cross the Ohio River into Cincinnati, you are entering the Queen City. And everyone knows what happens when you visit Manhattan; you're in the Big Apple. Are you planning a trip to Los Angeles, otherwise known as the City of Angels?
Since this particular exercise has been a favorite rabbit hole of mine for decades, I'll restrain myself and get to the point. Oh, okay, one more...Chicago = The Windy City. Alright, now let's get to it.
Unofficial...AND Official Nicknames for Kentucky Cities
So tell me...how often have you visited Vette City? When was the last time you hung out in the Athens of the West? Are you a frequent visitor to Derby City in early May? If you can answer these questions at all, then you already know they are referring to Bowling Green, Lexington, and Louisville, respectively. By the way, kudos if you know that second one. I've never heard it, but the University of Kentucky's College of Medicine offers an explanation.
And maybe, like me, you reside in the Barbecue Capitol of the World which is the long name for Owensboro.
The Commonwealth's four largest cities aren't the only ones with official nicknames; there's a long list of them, and most of them are unfamiliar to me. But what about UNofficial nicknames? We have those, too. And they tend to me more fun.
Louisville -- The Ville
I've always thought Derby City was Louisville's only official nickname while also believing "The Ville" was unofficial shorthand used by its residents. But I found it on that list, so we'll move on.
Lexington -- LexVegas
Lexington gets the "Vegas" suffix just like Nashville, or NashVegas, always has. It simply refers to a town that's a blast to visit. I'll let you decide for yourselves how accurate that is.
Growling Bean -- Bowling Green
I heard this for the first time during my college days and have loved it ever since. Obviously, there's nothing more to it than just reversing both words' first letters. It's similar to referring to Ohio County as "Oh Cow Heinie."
OTown -- Owensboro
I'm from Owensboro and have never heard this one. I've heard "The Big O" quite frequently and, of course, The Boro, which is my favorite.
What about you? Do you know of any other unofficial nicknames for Kentucky cities?
