Stretch of Kentucky Interstate Closing for Four Hours Friday Night
Several years ago while driving through Cincinnati, I found myself stopped on Interstate 75 for a very long time until I performed some fancy footwork--or WHEELwork, I suppose--and got out of it. A big truck had overturned and spilled nails all over the four-lane between Cincy and Dayton. It was a nightmare scenario only a screenwriter could concoct.
It was also a major hassle for anyone who was unable to maneuver out of the jam like I did. Unplanned stoppages like that are a pain in the neck, but that won't be the case Friday night in western Kentucky. We KNOW to avoid Interstate 24 between the I-69 interchange and Paducah because the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has now given us ample warning.
Planned Traffic Stoppage on Kentucky's Interstate 24
Friday night, November 1st, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will implement a traffic shift on the eastbound lane of I-24. Beginning at 7 PM, Spartan Contracting will block 24's slow lane around the 29 to 29.5 mile marker. That will give crews plenty of time to remove striping before both eastbound and westbound lanes close down at 10 PM. Both lanes will be blocked starting at Exit 27.
You can see from the graphic that it's the Tennessee River Bridge--or Luther Draffen Bridge--is in need of repairs, and that will lead to detours onto U.S. 62. Motorists will then be able to re-enter Interstate 24 at Exit 31 or Exit 40.
Everyday, on average, approximately 30,000 vehicles cross the Luther Draffen Bridge which was constructed in 1974. Information on message boards along the interstate will update drivers until the work begins Friday evening.
