We Don't Recommend Doing What These KY Explorers Did

How tempting is it to investigate when you see certain abandoned buildings or abandoned property? For me, this has happened quite frequently. On a couple of occasions, the burning desire joined forces with me actually parking the car and sitting there cogitating about what might happen if go through with it.

THAT'S how tempting it is for me. Alas, I've never done it--either because my better angels pulled me back (legal issues and all) or brief flecks of cowardice (property stability should always be a concern)--and life has gone on. That's why I sometimes live vicariously through social media daredevils who throw caution to the wind and go for it.

I'm always under the assumption some of these adventurers have gotten permission, but sometimes, neither they say they have nor is it indicated in the description below the video. The following presentation fits the bill and is one of the creepiest such videos I've ever seen, thanks to the context:

Abandoned Walmart in Madisonville KY

When Walmart opened a location in Hanson KY, I had no idea at the time that that meant the one in Madisonville, just a few miles south, had closed or had to close. Well, the latter ended up being true; the building was no longer safe, and so it closed in 2016.

In the summer of 2024, a couple of Kentucky explorers sneaked into it without permission and took a pretty thorough look around. It's one thing when a store just closes; it's quite another when it does so over safety issues. These guys forged ahead, nonetheless:

I'm guessing the possibility of burglary and breaking & entering charges never entered their heads when they posted this.

So, no, that will never be me walking through a boarded up and defunct box store. However, I will continue to live vicariously through the exploits of folks like these, and I wish them safety in their journeys. (Please keep it legal, though.)
