This Thanksgiving, Illinois law enforcement is stepping up efforts to ensure safe holiday travel with the “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaigns.

Increased Enforcement for Holiday Travelers

Running from Nov. 22 through Dec. 2, 2025, the initiative is a joint effort by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, and local agencies to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities during one of the busiest travel times of the year.

“Thanksgiving means more vehicles on the road – and an increased risk of crashes,” said Sheriff Gary Caruana. “By buckling up and making a plan for a sober ride home, you help everyone have a safe and happy holiday.”

Buckle Up for Safety

However, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the statewide seat-belt usage rate is 92.9%, leaving room for improvement. Law enforcement will focus on ensuring compliance to boost safety on Illinois roads.

Planning for a Sober Ride

If celebrating with alcohol or other impairing substances, authorities advise planning a sober ride home.

Options include using ride-share services, taxis, or public transportation, and calling 911 to report drunk drivers.

The Thanksgiving enforcement campaign is funded by federal traffic safety grants administered by IDOT.

Authorities hope this high-visibility effort will remind travelers to prioritize safety during the holiday season.
