Adopt a Wild Horse or Burro in Kentucky This Summer

Have you ever dreamed of adopting a wild mustang or giving a home to a scrappy little burro with some serious personality? This summer, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is making it easier than ever with an online auction and a pickup event right here in Kentucky.

From July 14 to July 21, the BLM will host an Online Corral auction. It's a virtual roundup of wild horses and burros available for adoption or purchase. The best part? You can browse the animals, apply, and place your bids all from your couch, coffee in hand, without breaking a sweat.

How the Online Auction Works

If you’re one of the winning bidders, you’ll be able to meet your new four-legged friend in person and take them home at the September 11 adoption event at the Christian County Expo Center in Hopkinsville.

Why These Animals Are Being Offered for Adoption

The animals available through the Online Corral come from overpopulated herds in the Western U.S., where wild horses and burros are removed to help balance the health of the rangelands and ensure the animals thrive. Most of them are untrained and unhandled, meaning you're getting a clean slate and a chance to form a bond like no other.

“This unique event gives the people of Hopkinsville and the surrounding region a convenient opportunity to provide a good home to a wild horse or burro,” said Annie Ebbers, Off-Range Branch Chief for the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program. “Adopters can gain a rewarding experience with a wild horse or burro while also helping to support the BLM’s mission to manage and protect these iconic animals.”

If you’re even a little bit interested, submit your application early so you can get pre-approved for bidding. The process is pretty straightforward, and starting bids are just $125.

What You Need to Qualify for Adoption

There are a few important things to know before you place your bid. You do need to be at least 18 years old, and you have to have at least 400 square feet of coral space per animal with proper fencing and shelter, as well as a safe way to transport your new buddy home.
