Indiana Law Enforcement Warns of Latest Phone Scam
Another Day. Another Scam.
It seems the more technologically advanced we get as a society, the easier it becomes for those with ill intent to prey on their victims and the latest warning from one Indiana law enforcement agencies in and around Evansville are alerting residents to the latest scam.
No, The Sheriff's Office is Not Calling You
In a recent post to social media, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office shared details of the latest scam. They say a local resident received a call from someone claiming to be with the VCSO. That was a lie the scammer was using to try to coerce the resident into sending money.
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office (VCSO) has been made aware of a recent scam attempt. A resident received a phone call from someone claiming to be with VCSO. The resident stated that the caller explained that they had a warrant for missing jury duty and they should report to the jail to pay $1000.
Don't Panic
If you get a call like this, don't panic. The VSCO says that no one from their office is going to call you asking for money to straighten out any kind of legal issue. They also aren't going to call and ask you to buy a gift card to use for making a payment.
What To Do If You Receive a Scam Call
If you receive a call and want to be sure that it is actually the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office on the other end, the agency recommends that you hang up the phone, and then call them at 812-421-6200. This way you know you are speaking to the real folks at VSCO and they can tell you if the call you received was legitimate.
What Not to Do If You Receive a Scam Call
If you do receive a call that you believe to be a scam, it is just important that you don't give out the following personal information:
- Date of birth
- Social security number
- Banking Information
- Credit card information
