I love movies, but it's safe to say I certainly watch far less than I did a few years ago, especially in theaters. As much as I love the movie theater experience, I only go these days if it's something I know folks are going to spoil online, such as the recent Deadpool & Wolverine movie. That said, there are still plenty of other movie buffs out there ready to watch a new film at the first chance they get. In fact, many of those folks can be found in the state of Illinois.
Illinois Ranks No. 8 on the List of States That Love Movies the Most
A 2023 study analyzed search volume data for multiple phrases, terms, and queries related to movies and movie genres over 12 months to determine which states love movies the most. California took the top spot (obviously), followed by Texas, and then Utah, which is home to the Sundance Film Festival. Illinois ranked No. 8 on the list of states, with an average monthly search volume of 1,122 searches per 100,000 people. The data also revealed the most searched movie genre for Illinois, which just so happened to be horror.
How Much Do Indiana and Kentucky Folks Love Movies?
While I was surprised to see so many film buffs in Illinois, I was even more surprised at how few there seem to be in Indiana and Kentucky. Indiana ranked No. 22 on the list of states that love movies the most, while Kentucky fell much further down the list at No. 37. Having lived in both states, it's clear that neither is the movie capital of the world, but still, I personally thought they would have ranked higher in the study. Perhaps it's time for a new film festival to revive the movie-loving energy?
