This cheeseburger is so wildly popular that it was named one of the best cheeseburgers in the U.S.

A Classic  American Dish

Few foods are as American as the cheeseburger.  It's believed that the cheeseburger was invented in America.  I mean, nothing says "freedom" quite like a grilled burger on a warm summer day.  Two places in the country claim to be where the cheeseburger originated, and it makes sense why there's a dilemma when you learn the history.

Who Invented the Cheeseburger?

According to The Spruce Eats, a 16-year-old is credited with creating the classic entree.  In 1924, Lionel Sternberger put a slice of American cheese onto a hamburger he was cooking at his father's Pasadena, California, sandwich shop, and the rest is history.  It's said Lionel and his dad loved the way it tasted, so they added a "cheese hamburger" to the menu.

However, here is where the confusion comes in.  The Spruce Eats goes on to say that the first place to call this new sandwich a "cheeseburger" is a restaurant you can still dine at today, Kaelin's in Louisville, Kentucky!  They added a "cheeseburger" to the menu in 1934.  Either way, one thing we can all agree on is that the deliciousness that is a cheeseburger was created in America!

The Best Cheeseburgers in the United States

Recently, LoveFood took the online ratings and reviews of cheeseburger joints across the country, and they ranked the best based on those reviews.  According to them, a restaurant in Indiana has one of the best cheeseburgers in America, and that's 317 Burger in Indianapolis.  However, the cheeseburger LoveFood specifically chose to make the list isn't your traditional cheeseburger.

LoveFood chose the Strawberry Hill burger specifically.  Here's what LoveFood says about the Strawberry Hill Burger and why it's one of the best in the country:

For some serious heat, try the Strawberry Hill at 317 Burger. It's a hot twist on a PB&J, with spicy strawberry compote, melted peanut butter, and ghost pepper cheese on top of the burger. If a burger isn't enough to fill you up, grab an order of the signature poutine or choose one of the many side dishes, including French fries and onion rings.

I think I'll stick with the classic burger toppings (although I have never turned down a burger with bacon jam or pimento cheese on it), and I'll let my husband enjoy this one because it's right up his alley! Something about peanut butter on a burger gives me weird vibes... Then again,  if this burger was good enough to be rated among the top burgers in the country, maybe I should give it a try before I judge.
