My Favorite Christmas Parade Memories

I have so many fond memories of the Christmas parades growing up. My family would bundle up, grab our lawn chairs, and brave the cold to watch the floats go by. One year, we somehow landed the best seat in town, a window spot at a restaurant along the route. But my favorite memory was riding my horse in the parade.

My mom and I both brought our horses, but hers got a little too nervous, so I ended up riding solo. Luckily, I had a good one who didn’t care about the crowds, the music, or the flashing lights. He went along by himself like it was just another Saturday.

Passing the Reins to the Next Generation

Fast forward to 2023. When I found out our local parade still allowed horses, I knew my daughter had to experience it, too. We loaded up our guy Tucker and headed to the Boonville Christmas Parade with some friends.

We didn’t realize the horses were supposed to park at the library, so of course, we parked right in the middle of everything and everyone. I was a little nervous, thinking the clown cars or giant floats might spook them, but nope. They just stood there munching on hay like it was no big deal. Tucker’s biggest concern was why the kids were getting candy from Santa, and he wasn’t.

From Grinch Green to Snoopy Spots

The first year my daughter rode, the parade theme was The Grinch. We painted Tucker green, and she dressed up like Cindy Lou Who. He was not impressed.

The next year, the theme was Peanuts. Since Tucker’s black and white, it only made sense that he’d be Snoopy and she’d be Woodstock. It was hilarious. Again, he was not impressed.

Actually, this is just his normal face. His nickname is Groucho. Don't worry, he had fun. He got lots of candy.

This year will be our third parade, and the girls are already counting down the days. It’s their second-favorite event of the year, right behind the county fair.
