Indiana’s Primary Election: Here’s What You Need to Know to Vote
Among everything else that is happening today, it's Indiana's Primary Election Day. That feels weird to even say, since it's usually the first week of May. Of course, nothing has been business as usual this year, and there has been more than one change in the voting process.
You might be reading this and thinking, 'Wait, I've already sent that in'! A lot of voters have been allowed to send in absentee ballots, due to COVID-19. If you are heading out to do your civil duty today, here is what you need to know.
Am I Registered to vote? - You can go to IndianaVoters.IN.gov and click on the
A window will pop up, and you can fill in your information.
- What is my Township or Precinct? - Once you have submitted your name, date of birth and county you are registered in from the step above, you should see your Voting Status, Precinct and Township This is important because some candidates only represent certain areas.
- Who is on the ballot? - On the right hand side of the screen you'll see a drop-down display with the eligible races that you can vote in.
- Where do I vote? - This handy form gives you a list of all of the polling places in your county. Simply go to the one that's most convenient for you.
- What about COVID-19 - Poll workers have protective masks, there is hand sanitizer, and you will be spaced at least 6 feet apart.
- Who should I call? Voter’s Registration Office at (812) 435-5223. For other election questions, you can call the Election Office at (812) 435-5122.
Indiana’s Photo ID Law:
Before signing the poll list and casting a ballot, you must present a government-issued photo ID to verify your identity. An valid ID for voting purposes must:
- Include the voter’s name, which must confirm—not necessary to be identical - to the name on the individual's voter registration record.
- Include a photograph of the individual.
- Except for certain military and veterans documents, include an expiration date that shows the ID current or expired after November 6, 2018.
- Be issued by the State of Indiana or the U.S. Government.
