The war of words between the City of Evansville and the Evansville IceMen continued as the deadline to reach a new lease agreement passed on Wednesday with no new deal.

Both sides have been tossing around numbers illustrating potential losses their side would suffer if they accepted the other's proposal since negotiations became public back in November. The most recent of which coming from the IceMen who stated yesterday the offer the City proposed on December 18th would cost the team $140,000 more than the current agreement which they claim charges them the highest rent in the entire ECHL. The City responded claiming the team's rebuttal offer would have cost the City between $100,000 to $125,000 more than the current agreement.

Mayor Winnecke's office released a short video Wednesday afternoon in which the Mayor attempted to clarify the discrepancy between the figures.

IceMen owner, Ron Geary, spoke with Brad Byrd during a segment on Eyewitness News Wednesday night to respond to the Mayor's comments and state the team's case on the current impasse. When asked (repeatedly) whether or not the team would leave Evansville, Geary never gave a definitive "yes" or "no". The closest he got was at the end of the interview when he said the City would be forcing his hand if they refused to provide a subsidy.

You can see Byrd's complete interview with Geary at Tristatehomepage.com.

If there is any silver lining to the current situation, it's that both sides claim they want to get a deal done that keeps the team in town. It's an extremely slim lining, but a lining nonetheless. Whether it happens or not is yet to be seen, and at this point in time seems unlikely.
