Maybe you decided to walk into work wearing an all-white linen outfit that makes you look like you just walked onto the beach of Bachelor in Paradise and you're confused by all the disgusted looks you're getting. First off, that outfit is never appropriate, but today it's super bad because it's after Labor Day, you savage.

Not being able to wear white after Labor Day has become the most cliche joke of all cliche jokes. But where in the hell does it come from? Open your brain holes, because it's about to get a whole bunch of learnin' up in this bish.

The practice started back in the late-1800's and early 1900's with rich people. Wearing white in the summer makes a lot of sense since the summer is hot and doesn't cook your body. However, this has nothing to do with comfort, it's all about power and money. The more wealthy wanted to distinguish themselves as being ballers (and shot callers) and didn't want people to think they were poor. As a vulgar display of power, they created all of these fashion rules for the lower-class people to follow, in this case, no white after Labor Day.

If you wanted to attend an event in the fall, but you showed up in your white summer clothes, people would know that "Hey, that person can't afford seasonally appropriate clothing!"

And then Nelson from The Simpsons laughed at you.

Some people have tried to buck the trend by wearing white all year long (Coco Chanel, The Pope, Ku Klux Klan members, etc), but nowadays most people don't actually care. Or at least you won't be asked to leave a place for wearing white. Personally, I normally don't care what people are wearing as long as it isn't pajamas in public at 4pm on a Wednesday afternoon.

Looking classy as fugggggg

There you have it! You now have learned some stuff you may not have known previously. If you're wearing white today, don't worry about it, we don't think you're THAT poor.
