Recently it was announced that Hammerheads, a bar on downtown Evansville's Main Street Walkway, has been sold and will be turning into (of all things) a church!  I've been to Hammerheads a handful of times and I became nostalgic thinking about all of the Evansville bars that have bitten the dust here recently.

When I first moved to Evansville nine years ago in 2007 there was seemingly a very happening and thriving bar/nightclub scene.  Obviously there are still several bars doing well here in town, but let's talk about the big ones that have closed down.  Then, let me know which of these Evansville bars you miss the most.

WOODY'S: Woody's was consistently one of the most happening places in Evansville.  It was compartmentalized conveniently based on your musical preferences with a stage for a live rock band in the main room, a DJ for hip-hop music and more traditional "club" experience, and a pool hall with a jukebox upstairs.  With plenty of bars and bartenders, it was a fun convenient place to get bombed at the Main Street exit off the Lloyd Expressway.  With weekly thong contests, wet T-shirt contests, and concerts, Woody's was the place where your favorite memories that you'll never remember were made.  Sadly, Woody's caught fire I believe around 2009.  They reopened "Woody's West" for a short time, but it never seemed to have the same magic as the original Woody's.

FAST EDDY'S: Fast Eddy's had a very strong reputation here in Evansville since long before I got here.  Opting more for one massive room, Eddy's was usually PACKED with people on any given weekend.  Between sets of live music and cover bands you could usually hear current dance music spun by DJ Jon B (I can't remember a time I was ever in Eddy's and Jon wasn't) so something was always going on.  Also, while not necessarily what they were known for, Fast Eddy's had an underrated menu for food and was a solid choice to go for a quick bite at lunchtime!

OXYGEN: Oxygen was in the North Park Shopping Center off 1st Avenue on Evansville's north side, and was probably the bar I personally spent the most time in.  Oxygen also offered four rooms with four unique experiences and musical preferences, but I'm sure their faithful clientele most-fondly remember the main dance room offering easily the Tri-State's best sound and light show.  It boasted dance cages and multiple bars as well as music provided by DJ Krazy Kris.  Oxygen worked hard to bring memorable events that you couldn't get anywhere else, like hip-hop concerts featuring acts you've actually heard of, Girls Gone Wild, and of course their famous and unforgettable foam parties!  Often times the parties on Saturday night were actually broadcast live over the radio on Club KISS on 106.1 KISS-FM (hosted by yours truly, The Rob).  Ultimately, after bouncing back and forth from being over-21 to under-21 and back again, Oxygen sadly shut down around 2011 or so.

HAMMERHEADS: The most-recent Evansville bar casualty, Hammerheads was located on the Main Street Walkway downtown.  Hammerheads had a huge surge in popularity several years ago when a lot of the other bars faded away.  It had two floors for people to get their drink on.  Upstairs was a little plain, although I for one appreciated the somewhat decent gathering of arcade games.  Downstairs seemed to be the destination, especially when they offered their themed 80s or 90s nights!

STONEY'S: Honestly, it seems like only yesterday Stoney's was THE choice for Evansville bars and nightclubs.  Located in the then-Casino District.  It brought the flash and flair of their Las Vegas roots and whenever Stoney's did anything, they did it BIG!  They put a country slant on everything from the decor to the music, although after a certain point in the night the music would be more dance themed (Thank God!).  Stoney's became known for their Bikini Bullriding on their mechanical bull as well as their delicious and scantily-clad eye-candy bartenders and wait staff known affectionately as the "Stoney's Girls" who were not above jumping up on the tables to do their famous dance to the "Wobble."  Stoney's seemed like it was easily the most popular night spot in Evansville during its several-year run, but suddenly disappeared after Casino Aztar turned into Tropicana.
