I have gone on record stating that I feel music can make anything better, like working, cooking, doing the deed and especially movies. Music just adds to the soul of anything you put your time into and creates a whole new experience. I know there are numerous great musicals out there. I do not have a taste for every one of them.  So, for the true musical connoisseur, this list will not be the one for you. However, for what it's worth, this is a list of those I enjoy. The Wizard of Oz needs at least an honorable mention, although was not quite top five material. I do love this movie, but had a feeling that if I didn't at least mention it, I'd be in for some verbal face smacks, of which I'm not a fan.  Nevertheless, here are my top five movie musicals:

5. Hairspray - The original was good in its own right, but I'm talking about the opportunity to see John Travolta and Christopher Walken sing and dance together. Keeping true to the original, this is a musical about dancing to your own beat and breaking down barriers along the way. This is about the most fun you can have while watching a movie that secretly tackles a serious social topic - white people dancing!

4. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - I’m actually talking about the original. Not even Johnny Depp can touch Gene Wilder in this role. Who wouldn't want to visit a place of pure imagination? A story for children, or children at heart that sings you through your sweetest fantasy.  It does this while teaching a straight forward message about moral standards, as well as the difference between people who are good at heart opposed to those who may be a bad egg.

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas - A romantic tale set in Halloween town and portrayed by the unlikeliest of characters. It tells the story of a guy that has lost passion in what he does in life and looks for inspiration. He finds it in Christmas, of all places. He creates a grand idea to inspire himself and those around him in a fashion that just doesn't pan out like he had envisioned.

2. Little Shop of Horrors - An entertaining story of Seymour, a misfit florist, who finds a new (alien) species of plant.  He uses it to find popularity and fame in some questionable ways, primarily by feeding people to the plant. Of course, the plant has greater plans that Seymour has to stop before it is too late. If need be, I can still recite all of the plant's (Audrey II) songs, if any plays out there need that role filled. Also, I need to mention that Steve Martin is unforgettable as the dentist.

1. Grease - Okay, this is the musical of musicals, and even if you question the rest of my list, you cannot question this one. It's everything a musical should be. A light story of people from opposite sides of the track finding love, high school hijinks, and a car race. Even if you're not a fan of musicals, I bet you know this movie, along with at least one of the many songs it made popular. Do you know the Hand Jive? Not to mention it spring boarded John Travolta's music career...oh wait.  Anyway, no one can deny that Grease is the word!
